The dichotomy between “Iranian national identity” and “Islamic-Shi'a identity” is one of the most controversial epistemic, social, and educational cleavages in contemporary Iran. Adopting a theoretical-analytical approach and documentary-discourse analysis, and drawing on documented examples, this article shows that this dichotomy is not merely a product of anti-religious media or archaic nationalism; it is also reproduced in traditional religious discourse, particularly within the clergy and Islamic seminaries. The theoretical framework is based on Berger’s views on pluralism and the necessity of choice, Bauman’s theory of liquid identity, Giddens’s concept of ontological security, Shayegan’s notion of fragmented identity, Castells’s typology of identity, and psychological theories of identity developed by Erikson, Marcia, and Benet-Martínez. The genealogy of this dichotomy shows that organic coexistence prevailed in the premodern tradition, while opposition emerged through encounters with modernity and archaic nationalism during the Pahlavi era, alongside the cultural trauma resulting from these developments. Identity conflict is analyzed across four dimensions: epistemic-jurisprudential, narrative-historical, symbolic-linguistic, and institutional-methodological, through mechanisms of reduction, othering, selective silence, and normalization of a single belonging. Drawing on the Qur’an and a narration from Imam al-Sajjad, the article shows that these texts distinguish between love of one’s people and homeland and blameworthy “ʿasabiyyah.” This conflict may lead to perceived identity incompatibility, foreclosure, weakened bridging social capital, and intergenerational gaps; these consequences are theoretical inferences. Finally, a model of “ethical-civilizational education with a synergistic multilayered identity” and its implications for preachers, seminaries, media, and education are presented.
